Line 11 - In the late fall 1778, Martha Washington traveled to Philadelphia, where she arrived by 14 December (see Crane, Elizabeth Drinker Diary, 1:336-37). GW met her there when he arrived in that city on 22 Dec., following a directive from Congress that he meet with them on matters concerning a possible expedition against Canada as well as other matters respecting the objectives for the next campaign and army administration. On 2 Feb. 1779, GW and Martha left Philadelphia for the army's winter encampment at Middlebrook, N.J., where they arrived on the 5th. See GW to John Mitchell, 11 Nov. 1778, and n.1 to that document [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Revolutionary War Series, Volume 18, pages 112-13)]; see also GW to Major General Stirling, 21 Dec. 1778 (first letter), and n.1 to that document [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Revolutionary War Series, Volume 18, pages 485-86)]; GW to the Continental Congress Committee of Conference, 8 Jan. 1779 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Revolutionary War Series, Volume 18, pages 594-97)]; and GW to the Continental Congress Committee of Conference, 2 Feb. 1779 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Revolutionary War Series, Volume 19, pages 122-23)].
