James Adam (died c.1787) was a merchant in Alexandria. He was also for a time a partner with Robert Adam and Matthew Campbell in the firm of Robert Adam & Co., which purchased GW’s flour. On 20 Oct. 1771, Adam brought to Mount Vernon the payment of £41.0.6, which was part payment from Robert Adam & Co. for the flour that GW had sold the firm earlier in the year (see Ledger A, 345; see also Diaries, 3:62).
