James Ballinger (Ballenger) was leasing the 120-acre lot no. 4 in Fauquier County, Va., in 1769. The lot was part of the 2,682–acre tract in Fauquier and Loudoun counties purchased by GW in 1767, following the settlement of the estate of George Carter (died c.1742), to whom the land had belonged. GW's account with James Ballinger shows that the latter owed GW £ 48 for rent from 1772 through 25 Dec. 1784. The contra side of the ledger notes that Ballinger's account was "Settled by" GW's "Collector" (Ledger B, 71).
