Dudley Digges (1718–1790) of York County and Williamsburg, Va., was a member of the committee appointed in 1756 to supervise the expenditure of funds for the Virginia Regiment. The Virginia statute entitled "An Act for raising the Sum of Twenty-five Thousand Pounds, for the better protection of the Inhabitants on the Frontiers of this Colony, and for other purposes therein mentioned," stipulated that Digges and others on the committee were to "direct and appoint how . . . money shall be applied towards the raising, maintaining, arming, and providing for so many men to be raised for the better protection and defence of the frontiers" (Va. Statutes [Hening], 7:9-20).  Digges served in the House of Burgesses from 1752 to 1776 and was colonel of the York County militia. Digges also served at times in connection to various Yorktown lotteries (see Ledger A, 240 and Ledger B, 4; see also Cash Accounts, March 1772, and n.7 to that document).
