Debit Side Annotation

Line 2 -In Bernard Moore's letter to GW of 11 May 1772, Moore advised GW of the sale of his estate for the discharge of his debts to his creditors, including GW, who in 1771, had loaned Moore £100 for the purchase of slaves, which were to stand security for the loan. In his letter, Moore added that "Mr [John] Walker" was "making out a proper list of the Negroes that was purchased" by his friends for his use, assuring GW "that every thing proper will be done to secure" him. On 13 May 1772, Burwell Bassett wrote GW on the matter, stating that John Walker had given Bassett "and Instrement in writing Obliging himself to make us a Deed for the Negroes to return to us after the Death of Colo. Moore & his Lady". See Moore to GW, 11 May 1772 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Colonial Series, Volume 9, pages 44-45)]; see also Burwell Bassett to GW, 13 May 1772 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Colonial Series, Volume 9, pages 45-46)]. For more on both Moore's attemps to liquidate his estate, and GW's loan to Moore, which Moore requested in his letter to GW of 12 Jan. 1771, see Moore to GW, 29 Dec. 1766 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Colonial Series, Volume 7, pages 479-80)]; Moore to GW, 12 Jan. 1771 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Colonial Series, Volume 8, pages 427-28)].
