The hard, oval, aromatic kernel of the seed of the evergreen tree  Myristica fragrans (family Myristicaceae), native to the Moluccas, which occurs singly within a greenish-yellow fruit (the fleshy covering or aril immediately surrounding the seed being the source of mace); this seed grated or ground and used as a spice or in herbal medicines.
