John Thornton (d. 1777) resided near Fredericksburg and represented Spotsylvania County in the House of Burgesses. He was a close associate of the Washington family, and during the French and Indian War was a militia colonel. Thornton became the newly elected Master of the Masonic Lodge of Fredericksburg in 1754.
One of Thornton's daughters later married GW’s younger brother Samuel Washington.
