Credit Side Annotation
Line 15 - In a letter of 18 Feb. 1799, the date of this transaction, GW sent Philadelphia merchant Clement Biddle $100 "to be placed" to GW's "Credit." The money was to pay Biddle's account for expenses he incurred in sending GW several items, including hats, shoes, grass seed, and a book case that had been manufactured in Philadelphia. GW had asked Biddle to procure these items and have them shipped to him. See GW to Clement Biddle, 18 Feb. 1799 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirement Series, Vol. 3, page 386]; GW to Biddle, 20 Jan. 1799, and n.2 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirement Series, Volume 3, pages 321-22)]; and Biddle to GW, 5 Feb. 1799 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirement Series, Volume 3, pages 357-58)].
Line 18 - Eleanor Parke Custis (1779-1852), the daughter of John Parke Cusis and Eleanor Calvert Custis, married GW’s nephew Lawrence Lewis (1767-1839) at Mount Vernon on 22 Feb. 1799. GW wrote in his diary for that date: "The Revd. Mr. [Thomas] Davis & Mr. Geo. Calvert came to dinner & Miss Custis was married abt. Candle light to Mr. Lawe Lewis" (Diaries, 6:335). "Richd Burnet" may refer to Richard Burnet (also known by the name of Richard Burnet Walker), who had previously served as a housekeeper or butler at Mount Vernon, and who may have assisted with preparations for the wedding. See George Washington's Last Will and Testament, 9 July 1799, n.27 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirement Series, Volume 4, pages 477-511)].
