Lewis Burwell (1716-1784) of James City County, lived at Kingsmill plantation on the James River about four miles from Williamsburg, Virginia. He represented James City County in the House of Burgesses, 1758-74, and was for several years a member of the board of visitors and governors of the College of William and Mary.
In May 1771 Burwell bought from GW for £130 “4 Chariot Horses—to be paid for at the Octr Genl Court” (Ledger A, 210). On 21 March 1772 GW received £74.3 in partial payment “By Cash of your Son Thacker” (Ledger B, 17). Burwell completed his payment in December 1772.
