In 1775, Lund Washington paid £2.2.6 to the account of John Butcher, who had apparently provided GW with "Nots &c." (see Ledger B, 142; see also Lund Washington to GW, 14 Nov. 1775, in Papers, Revolutionary War Series, 2:373-77). Butcher may be the John Butcher (c.1747-1811) who was an Alexandria, Va., merchant and owner of a pothouse (see Miller, Artisans and Merchants of Alexandria, 1:54; see also Alexandria Daily Gazette, Commercial & Political, 23 Nov. 1811).
