Prior to 20 Sept. 1770, GW employed Dominicus Gubner, to whom he referred as "a Dutch Smith," as a blacksmith on a daily basis, paying him 3 shillings per day for a total of 19 days (see Ledger A, 325). On 20 Sept., Gubner, who resided in Fairfax County, Va., entered into articles of agreement with GW, by which Gubner agreed to do blacksmithing for GW on a regular basis at the rate of £32 per year. GW agreed to allow Gubner and his family live rent-free on a plantation previously rented by John Crook, and which was apparently part of the Mount Vernon tract. Gubner was employed by GW until the fall of 1773 (see Ledger B, 34; see also Diaries, 2:275-76).
