Wilson Miles Cary (1734-1817), a brother of GW's friend Sarah Cary Fairfax, owned several estates, including Ceelys and Carysbrook in Elizabeth City County, Va., and Richneck in Warwick County, Virginia. He served for a number of terms in the Virginia legislature and was for a time commander of the Elizabeth City County militia.
In May 1771, Cary paid for seven barrels of herring and for one barrel of shad, both of which he had received from GW in August 1770 (see Ledger A, 330).
