GW signed a contract with Charles Hagan on 5 Jan. 1788 (DLC:GW), in which the latter agreed to begin work as a brickmaker at Mount Vernon that spring. In addition to making bricks, Hagan was to "superintend the business of a brick yard" for GW. Hagan's pay was set at a rate of £4.10 a month, allowing 26 working days or nights to the month. GW agreed to provide him with provisions and a half a pint of rum per day. GW's account with Hagan suggests that the latter worked for GW from 15 April to 12 Nov. 1788 (see Ledger B, 271).
