Line 17 - In the spring of 1783, GW had ordered two pipes of Madeira wine, a box of citron, and two baskets of figs, from the firm John Searle & Company, and requested that the goods be sent to "Potomack River in Virginia." By 14 Sept. of that year, GW received the invoice and bill of lading for those items, which had initially been delivered at Baltimore, and he informed New York City merchant and wine importer Lewis Pintard (1732-1818) that he would pay him in the amount of £74.9.6 sterling, on the account of John Searle & Company, once he had "a satisfactory reason assigned" for their having been shipped to the Maryland port (GW to John Searle & Company, 21 May 1783, DLC:GW; GW to Lewis Pintard, 14 Sept. 1783, DLC:GW).

Line 18 - New York Bookseller and printer James Rivington (1724–1802) had sent some books to GW in the summer of 1783, though it is possible that he sent additional books later in the year. The works that Rivington sent GW that summer included, among others, Samuel Johnson's The Beauties of Johnson and Laurence Sterne's The Beauties of Sterne.  These may have been among the publications included in Rivington's "Acct for Books" which GW paid five days after making his triumphal return to New York City on 25 Nov. 1783, when the British forces evacuated that city (see GW to William Stephens Smith, 6 Aug. 1783, MHi: Adams Papers).
