Ledger B, 1772 - 1793: pg.327

Credit Side Annotation

Line 3 - Transfer tobacco was the excess tobacco that remained after a planter filled his hogsheads, but which was in too insufficient quantity to fill another hogshead. This excess tobacco was taken to the warehouse for inspection "loose" or in bundles, and the planter was given a transfer note entitling him to a specific amount of pounds of tobacco drawn from the total stock of transfer tobacco (see Iain Gately, Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization [New York, 2002], 108-9) [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Colonial Series, Volume 7, pages 331-32)]
