GW, Fielding Lewis, and Dr. Thomas Walker purchased land from Joseph Jones and James Wright in 1766 that was located in what was then known as Nansemond County, on or near Nansemond River. That land was to be used for the development of the Dismal Swamp. Nansemond County no longer exists.
