Between 1796 and 1808, English immigrant John Gadsby (c.1766-1844) ran a tavern called Gadsby's tavern, which was located on the corner of Royal and Cameron streets in Alexandria. The tavern consisted of both a three-story building built by John Wise in 1792, and the adjoining old City Tavern. John Gadsby had rented both structures from Wise, and then combined the two buildings into one tavern (Gadsby's), which for many years provided some of the best accommodations in the country. Gadsby was later the owner of the National Hotel in Washington, D.C. (see Harold D. Moser et al., eds., The Papers of Andrew Jackson, 10 vols. to date [Knoxville, 1980–], 9:492).
