Credit Side Annotation
Line 23 - William Booker (d. 1802), an agricultural inventor residing in Richmond, Va., in the latter 1790s, was at Mount Vernon from 14 to 18 Aug. 1798 in order to make repairs to the threshing machine that he had erected for GW at Union Farm in the summer of 1797. Booker came to make the repairs after GW had alerted him a few months earlier to the poor performance of the machine. In a letter of 15 April 1798, GW wrote in part: "You will recollect, that in its first performance, under your own direction, the execution in the course of the day fell short of 50 bushls—it has been growing worse, until I was obliged to disuse it, not being able to get out 25 bushls in the day; and before 500 bushls were got out, it had expended two bands which cost between eight & £10." Prior to his travels to Mount Vernon, Booker advised GW that he was sending him "a raw hide band of the best Quality" for the thresher.
