Elizabeth Brent Clifton (d. 1773) was the daughter of Robert Brent of Woodstock, Stafford County, Va., and the cousin and wife of William Clifton, from whom GW had acquired his Clifton’s Neck land in 1760. By her will dated 26 Nov. 1772, she made her nephew Robert Brent (c.1730–1780), of Woodstock, and a cousin, William Brent (1733–c.1782) of Richland, both in Stafford County, her executors and trustees. In a codicil to her will, dated 27 Mar. 1773, she added GW’s name as a third executor, or trustee. Mrs. Clifton’s will left most of her property for the use of her daughter Anne Slaughter, and to her two granddaughters; the will contained provisos intended to prevent Anne’s husband Thomas Slaughter from getting control of any of the property.
