John Knowles and his wife Rachael were two indentured servants bought by GW for £45.6.8 in 1774 (see Ledger B, 119). John worked for GW as a bricklayer in the mid–1770s, and payments were made to him in the early 1780s as well (see Ledger B, 160, 166). He returned to work at Mount Vernon in May 1786 at a wage of £5 per month and a pint of rum per day. In 1789 he and his wife were employed for one year as bricklayer and household servant, respectively. John died by May 1790 (see Ledger B, 321).
