Ledger C, 1790 - 1799: pg.27

Debit Side Annotation

Line 8 - In 1795 Dr. Charles Landon Carter (born c.1774)  was appointed a surgeon aboard a ship engaged in the China trade, and was authorized to venture a sum of $500 during the voyage, probably for the purpose of bringing goods back to the United States for sale. GW lent Carter $200 for the venture, and in a letter of 2 June 1797, Carter informed GW that he was reimbursing him the $200 "with interest thereon from the 18th March 1795 to the 1st June 1797". Eight days later, on 10 June, GW replied to Carter that he had received the money and interest, amounting to $226, but that he was returning the interest, since his loan had not been based on "pe⟨cuniary⟩ motives".  See Charles Landon Carter to GW, 2 June 1797, and the notes to that document [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirment Series, Volume 1, pages 165-66)].
