Credit Side Annotation

Line 20 - On 14 May 1787, the Connecticut Courant, and Weekly Intelligencer (Hartford)  announced the publication that day of the one-volume octavo edition of Joel Barlow's The Vision of Columbus, a poem in nine books. On 18 May, the date of this transaction, GW, who was in Philadelphia attending the Constitutional Convention, paid David Humphreys (1752-1818) £10 Pennsylvania currency for his subscription of twenty copies of the poem, with each copy costing "One Dollar and a Third" (Pennsylvania Packet, and Daily Advertiser [Philadelphia], 30 Dec. 1786). During his stay in Philadelphia, GW presented copies of Barlow's poem to several people, including Ann Allen Penn, and Benjamin Franklin's daughter, Sarah Bache. To Mrs. Penn, he wrote the following in a letter dated 18 Sept. 1787: "Genl Washington takes the liberty of offering his respectful compliments to Mrs Penn—and the Vision of Columbus. It is one of several Copies for which he subscribed some years ago and received since he came to this City. To the merit, or demerit of the performance the General can say nothing—not having had time to read it." See GW to Ann Allen Penn, 18 Sept. 1787, and n.1 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Confederation Series, Volume 5, pages 334-35)].
