Philip Pendleton (1752–1802), an attorney, agreed with GW in June 1771 to buy 180 acres of GW’s Bullskin plantation “for £400 the Money to be paid in two years with Int[eres]t from the 25th. of next Decr.” (Diaries, 3:37). A contract was signed that December, but Pendleton did not make any payments on either the principal or the interest, and in early 1773 he transferred his right to purchase the property to Samuel Washington, who also failed to pay for it. The land was left encumbered in Samuel Washington’s estate when he died in 1781.
