William McGachen (McGachin) was a sea captain with whom GW had dealings for a number of years. He was captain of the "convict Ship" Phoenix, which was owned by Stewart & Campbell of London. He often sailed between the Potomac and London. McGachen, who also commanded the Tryal and Thornton, carried goods for GW aboard his ships, and at times procured goods for GW.
