Robert Alexander (d. 1793), GW's neighbor and foxhunting companion, was the son of Col. Garrard (Gerard) Alexander of Alexandria, and the brother-in-law of GW's nephew Fielding Lewis, Jr. He lived on a 904-acre plantation upriver from Mount Vernon, just north of Four Mile Run, and was married to Mariamne Stoddert Alexander. In 1760 he became indebted to GW for £100 which he used to purchase an English stallion (Ledger A, 96). Two years later, this bond was paid off in two installments of £50 (Ledger A, 145).
