John Canon (Cannon; c.1740-1798) of Washington County, Pa., owned a substantial tract of land on Chartiers Creek near GW’s Millers Run lands. He was a justice for the Virginia district of West Augusta and for Yohogania County from 1775 to 1780, represented the county in the Virginia assembly, 1777–78, and served from 1781 to 1783 in the Washington County militia. GW employed him in 1786 as a land agent for the 2,813–acre tract he owned at Millers Run in Washington County and in 1787 entrusted him with the management of the 1,650–acre tract known as Washington’s Bottom in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Canon was GW's rent collector for Fayette and Washington counties, though GW was ultimately dissatisfied with his services. In June 1794, GW replaced Canon with Charles Morgan as his rental agent for the abovementioned counties.
