William Crawford (1732-1782), brother of Valentine Crawford and husband to Hannah Vance Crawford, was, in 1755, commissioned an ensign in the company of scouts attached to the Virginia Regiment. Later promoted to lieutenant in the Virginia Regiment, Crawford served with GW on the Forbes expedition of 1758. After the French and Indian War, Crawford often acted as GW’s surveyor and land agent in Pennsylvania, where he removed in 1765, after having resided in Frederick County, Virginia. Crawford later served in the Revolutionary War, first as a lieutenant colonel of the 5th Virginia Regiment, and then as colonel of the 7th Virginia Regiment. He resigned his commission in March 1777, but remained active in the defense of the western frontier. In 1782, he was killed by Indians while on the Sandusky expedition.
