Ledger B, 1772 - 1793: pg.198

Credit Side Annotation

Line 14 - After painter Joseph Wright (1756-1793) had painted GW's portrait in 1783, GW commissioned him to paint a replica of that work, or a similar portrait, for Friedrich-Christoph, Graf zu Solms und Tecklenberg, who in July 1783 informed GW that he wished to add GW's portrait to his collection of paintings of great men. For GW's directives concerning the delivery of the portrait to Solms, see GW to Solms, 3 Jan. 1784 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Confederation Series, Volume 1, pages 8-9)];  see also GW to Joseph Wright, 10 Jan. 1784 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Confederation Series, Volume 1, pages 32-33)]

Line 15 - GW paid 11 shillings, three pence for A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (2 vols., London, 1768), written by Laurence Sterne (1713-1768).
