Ledger B, 1772 - 1793: pg.265

Credit Side Annotation

Line 21 - GW wrote in his diary for 2 May 1788 that "The Vessel from York River" had arrived that day with 290 barrels of corn "had from Doctr. [David] Stuart from the Plantns. of the decd. Mr. [John Parke] Custis".  The vessel in question belonged to Edward Pye Chamberlayne (1758-1806), who transported on more than one occasion corn to Mount Vernon from the Custis plantations on York River.  On 4 June, GW again paid £20 to Chamberlayne's skipper Gibb Jackson for the transport of another 310 barrels of corn to Mount Vernon.  By early June, GW received a total of 600 barrels of corn from John Parke Custis's estate at a cost of £450 (see Ledger B, 269, 272). Chamberlayne delivered corn to GW again in 1798. See Diaries, 5:315 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Diaries, Volume 5, page 315)]. See also Diaries, 5:338 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Diaries, Volume 5, page 338)]; and David Stuart to GW, 10 Sept. 1798 [ Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Retirement Series, Volume 2, page 602)].
