GW owned two lots in Alexandria, no. 112 at the corner of Pitt and Prince streets and no. 118 at the corner of Pitt and Cameron streets. In 1769 he began construction of a small town house on his Cameron Street lot under the supervision of two Alexandria workmen, Edward Rigdon (d. 1772), a joiner, and Richard Lake (Leak, Leake, d. 1775). Work on the house continued until sometime in 1771.
