Credit Side Annotation
Line 9 - From 7-9 March 1789 GW was in Fredericksburg, Va., to visit his mother, Mary Ball Washington, who had been residing in that city since 1772, and who was severely ill at the time with what is believed to be breast cancer. Aware of his mother's declining health, and of his almost certain election to the presidency (though it was not until mid-April 1789 that he received confirmation) which he knew would greatly occupy his time, GW wished to pay his mother what he considered would likely be one last visit. On 6 March, GW informed Alexandria merchant and shipowner Richard Conway that he was leaving the following day for Fredericksburg "in order probably to discharge the last Act of personal duty" to his mother. According to one report, GW left Fredericksburg for Mount Vernon on the morning of 9 March. The report further noted that the object of his visit was "to take leave of his aged mother, sister and friends, previous to his departure for the New Congress". See GW to Richard Conway, 6 March 1789, and n.2 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Presidential Series, Volume 1, pages 368-69)]; see also Diaries, 5:445-47 [Rotunda | Founders Online]; and The Federal Gazette, and Philadelphia Evening Post, 24 March 1789.
Mary Ball Washington died in August 1789.
