Lewis Lemart (Lamart), who had acted briefly as GW’s rental agent before his death in the spring of 1785, began leasing GW’s lot no.10 on the Fauquier-Loudoun County border in December 1772 at £7 per year for 150 acres. The lot, which had been leased to Robert Thompson in 1769, was part of the tract called Ashby’s Bent, the 2,682 acres that GW bought from the estate of George Carter in November 1767. After Lemart's death, his wife, Anne, and their sons continued to rent the property, though she had difficulties paying the rent for the next three years.
