Debit Side Annotation
Lines 5, 7, 9 - Royal Gift, a blooded jackass given to GW by King Charles III of Spain, arrived at Mount Vernon in December 1785. GW put Peter, the groom to his Arab stallion Magnolio, in charge of the ass, and both men were vexed by Royal Gift’s failures at stud his first covering season. In 1788, however, Compound, Mount Vernon’s first native jack, was born of Royal Gift and one of the jennets sent by Lafayette [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Presidential Series, Volume 6, page 92)].
On 13 July 1788, GW noted in his diary that "Mr. George Lee of Maryland" breakfasted at Mount Vernon that day. On that same day, GW's ledger shows a payment from Maryland planter George Lee (1736-1807) in the amount of £9.6.0 (see line 5). See Diaries, 5:361 [Rotunda | Founders Online].
