Philadelphia merchant Clement Biddle (1740-1814) served during the Revolutionary War as commissary general of forage for the Continental army with the rank of colonel, 1777-80, and as quartermaster general of the Pennsylvania militia in 1781. After the war, Biddle resumed his career as a merchant, and served as GW's commercial agent in Philadelphia, handling much of GW's personal business in that city.
