Debit Side Annotation
Line 10 - In a letter to Richard Bland Lee of 11 Nov. 1787, which has not been found, GW enclosed "one guinea & an half " for a "ram Lamb," which GW apparently wanted brought to Mount Vernon with the assistance of Lee. Lee replied to GW on 23 Nov. from Alexandria, informing him that since "no expence was incurred" by Lee "in having" the lamb brought to that city, he was returning "the half guinea which has been sent on account of charges". Line 32 of the contra side of the ledger indicates that the lamb in question was probably the "Cape of Good Hope Lamb" for which GW recorded having paid £2.2 to Lee on 15 November. See Richard Bland Lee to GW, 23 Nov. 1787 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Confederation Series, Volume 5, page 450)]. It is unclear as to GW's reasons for requesting the lamb, but he may have wanted it for breeding purposes, as he raised sheep at Mount Vernon and had been interested in both sheep breeding and wool production. See Arthur Young to GW, 19 May 1789 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Presidential Series, Volume 2, pages 341-44)]; see also GW to John Sinclair, 20 Oct. 1792, and n.1 to that document [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Presidential Series, Volume 11, pages 247-48)]; and GW to Anthony Whitting, 21 April 1793 [Rotunda | Founders Online | Print (Presidential Series, Volume 12, pages 463-68)].
